Ruby Chat is an AI girlfriend and roleplay app from Coastal Alps LLC, on the web, iPhone and Android. You browse a grid of characters, each with a profile listing age, personality tags, hobbies and a short backstory, then jump into a chat. If none fit, you write your own scenario in a few short blocks and set up a persona for yourself, so different stories can have different versions of you. Its site says characters remember context, can share images in chat and can send voice messages, in nine languages. Chatting is free, and an optional Premium subscription unlocks unlimited chats, messages, scenarios and personas. The screenshots here are from its official website.
Reviewers who like it say setting up your own scenario is easier than in other roleplay apps, and some use it for storytelling more than flirting. The complaints are about images that do not match the chat and an upgrade screen that comes on strong at the start. It has been on the App Store since September 2024 and is rated 18+.
Who it’s for
Ruby Chat suits adults who want an AI girlfriend style chat but like to write their own setup rather than pick from a fixed story.
If you want one companion you design and keep long term, Duple, Kindroid or Nomi may suit you better. If you want a huge community library, try Character.AI or Talkie.

Just starting out, but so far so great
I’ve played around with alot of roleplay chat apps, but never come across one that is this easy to set up your own scenario with - just two or three uncomplicated description blocks to create your own environment and story, and you’re off and running…
We searched Reddit through the Arctic Shift archive and found no Ruby Chat community yet, so no Reddit quotes appear here. Apple’s feed returned only 9 recent written reviews; we skipped ones with sexual content.
Each review links to its source. Quotes are word for word; anything marked Paraphrase is our summary. We skipped reviews with explicit or abusive content. Reviewers’ names are not shown.
