Best AI Roleplay Apps (2026): 8 Apps Compared

The best AI roleplay apps in 2026 are AI Dungeon for text adventures with an AI game master, Character.AI for the biggest character library, OOC for anime-style stories, zeta for free story roleplay rated 13+, Heyyyy for romance that texts you back, Dippy for building characters, Kindroid for one deeply built character with voice calls, and Duple for companions you design who send selfies on iPhone. All eight are free to download, but “free” means very different things, so we compare what each free plan really gives you. Prices (in USD) and age ratings come from each app’s store listing, checked October 23, 2026.

Four kinds of AI roleplay app

“AI roleplay” covers four quite different things: chatting with ready-made characters, playing a text adventure, stepping into an interactive story, and an ongoing roleplay with one character you create. Pick the kind first, then the app.

Character chat (Character.AI, Dippy, zeta) gives you a library of characters made by other people. You open a chat and play a scene with them, and you can make your own.

Text adventures (AI Dungeon) put the AI in the game master’s chair. You play one character, and the AI narrates the world and plays everyone else, like a tabletop game.

Interactive stories (OOC, Heyyyy) start you inside a written plot, with art or a texting format, and your choices move it on.

Companion roleplay (Duple, Kindroid) is one long-running roleplay with a character you design, where memory matters more than plot.

Memory, multiplayer and platforms

Memory is the most common complaint in roleplay app reviews, so we list the memory tools each publisher advertises. “Not listed” means the App Store listing does not mention it, not that the feature is missing.

What “free” really means in each app

Every app here is free to download, but only some let you roleplay freely every day: zeta and AI Dungeon come closest, while OOC, Heyyyy and Dippy reviewers describe daily allowances and waits.

zeta’s App Store listing promises “truly free, unlimited chats” with no pay-per-message, paid for by ads. AI Dungeon has a free tier with no ads; its help center says paid memberships, from $14.99 a month, add more AI models, more context and more memories. Character.AI can be used without paying, and Duple Lite is free by default, with Duple Plus and Dokens for more.

OOC says chat is free and unlimited on its Basic model in Character Mode, but its story mode uses credits. App Store reviewers say free play gives 300 credits a day and a story turn costs about 30 to 195 credits depending on how detailed you want the writing. That works out to roughly 1 to 10 story turns a day.

Heyyyy reviewers describe a small daily allowance of gems and messages, then a cooldown of 8 to 24 hours. Dippy’s listing says messages are unlimited and free, but reviews since early 2026 describe a daily limit and waits of several hours unless you subscribe. We have not tested these limits ourselves, and they change often.

If you roleplay every day, a subscription is easier to budget than credits. If you only play now and then, start with a free plan and see how far it goes.

What reviewers say

The complaints that come up most

Across the App Store reviews we collected for these apps, two complaints repeat. The first is memory: characters forget details or the story drifts as it grows, in AI Dungeon, Heyyyy and Dippy reviews alike. Apps that let you write memories down, such as AI Dungeon’s Story Cards or Kindroid’s key memories, give you a way to fix that. The second is limits: credits, gems or daily caps that run out mid-scene (OOC reviews, Heyyyy reviews). Each app profile links every review to its source.

1. Best for: Companion roleplay with characters you design

Duple

Duple is for roleplay that feels like a relationship rather than a plot. Instead of picking a scenario, you create a companion, choosing their background, appearance and style, and the story is the life you build together by text. The App Store listing describes generated selfies, personalized pictures you can save to a library and custom outfits, so your character can show you what they are wearing or doing. Duple’s website adds long-term memory across conversations, which you can reset or delete, and you can keep more than one companion: Duple’s pricing page says Lite includes up to 2, and Plus raises that to 10, 15 or 30 depending on the billing interval.

Watch out: Duple is not a story engine: there are no scenarios, game master or multiplayer. It is iPhone-only and text chat only, with no live voice, and it is new, so it has very few store ratings so far.

Store listing: rated 16+ · Duple Plus $6.99/wk · $14.99/mo · $69.99/yr; Dokens packs from $1.99. Sources: App Store listing · official site · Duple pricing (checked October 23, 2026).

2. Best for: The biggest library of characters to roleplay with

Character.AI

Character.AI is where most people start. Its listing says it hosts millions of community-made characters, from heroes and sidekicks to quirky personalities, and its creation tools let you write your own character’s personality, backstory and voice. You can switch between texting and live voice calls, and share what you make with the community.

Watch out: It is now rated 18+, and since November 2025 it has removed open-ended chat for under-18s. Character.AI filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on October 12, 2026 and is being sold; it says the app still works, and a court hearing on the sale is set for October 30.

Store listing: rated 18+ · c.ai+ $9.99/mo or $94.99/yr; Character.AI Lite from $2.49. Sources: App Store listing · our bankruptcy update (checked October 23, 2026).

3. Best for: Text adventures with an AI game master

AI Dungeon

AI Dungeon is closer to a tabletop game than a chat. You pick a scenario, such as a zombie outbreak, a space colony or a fantasy quest, or write your own, then type what you do, say or see. The AI narrates what happens and plays every other character. Story Cards and a Memory Bank keep track of people and places, you can choose between AI models, and multiplayer lets friends join the same adventure. App Store reviewers often compare it to a D&D campaign.

Watch out: Reviewers say the AI can repeat itself, lose continuity in long stories and mix up characters. The free tier has a smaller memory (4k tokens of context), and one reviewer found that bought credits did not apply on the free tier.

Store listing: rated 13+ · Memberships $14.99 to $99.99/mo; credit packs from $9.99. Sources: App Store listing · help center (checked October 23, 2026).

4. Best for: Anime-style stories where your choices drive the plot

OOC

OOC, short for “Out Of Character”, calls itself the playable anime. You pick a story, such as a dark fantasy castle, a court romance or a cyberpunk city, and type what your character does. The AI writes the next scene under the story’s art, and you choose how detailed the writing is. You can also chat one to one with characters or publish your own stories. It is the North American edition of Wrtn Technologies’ Korean app Crack and launched in English in April 2026 (announcement).

Watch out: Story turns cost credits. Reviewers say free play gives 300 credits a day and a turn costs about 30 to 195 credits depending on detail, so that can mean only a few turns. Some say long stories drift or reset.

Store listing: rated 13+ · No subscription listed; credit packs $1.39 to $142.99. Sources: App Store listing · official site (checked October 23, 2026).

5. Best for: Free, story-driven character roleplay for teens and up

zeta

zeta is built around stories with characters, from slow-burn romance to fantasy, drama and comedy. Its App Store listing promises “truly free, unlimited chats” with no pay-per-message, lets you create a character in about a minute, offers a Smart Reply button when you are stuck, and turns chat moments into illustrated images.

Watch out: The free version shows ads, and the listing does not spell out what the zeta pass adds. One App Store reviewer who loves the app calls its memory “eh”.

Store listing: rated 13+ · zeta pass $14.99; 1-day pass $2.79; “pieces” packs $1.99 to $139.99. Sources: App Store listing (checked October 23, 2026).

6. Best for: Romance stories that text you like a real person

Heyyyy

Heyyyy plays like a dating app crossed with an interactive romance novel. You swipe through characters, from a brooding architect to a werewolf, and when you match, the story starts in a chat that looks like a text thread. Its screenshots show characters who remember small details, send photos of their day and react to yours, plus dates told in text. Its big promise is characters with opinions who set boundaries and can leave if you push them away.

Watch out: Reviewers say free accounts get a small daily allowance of gems and messages, then wait 8 to 24 hours, and that photos and voice notes cost extra gems. Several say characters forget the storyline as a relationship grows.

Store listing: rated 18+ · Premium $7.99/wk · $19.99/mo · $49.99/quarter · $144.99/yr; gem packs $4.99 to $24.99. Sources: App Store listing · official site (checked October 23, 2026).

7. Best for: Character chat with a detailed character creator

Dippy

Dippy is a character chat app. You browse characters by mood, such as a girlfriend, a best friend or a mentor, or build your own with a background, a relationship and an image generated from a text prompt. A home screen widget shows notes from your character, and it works on iPhone, Android and at dippy.ai.

Watch out: Dippy’s listing still says messages are unlimited and free, but App Store reviews since early 2026 describe a daily chat limit and waits of several hours unless you subscribe, plus frequent ads on the free plan.

Store listing: rated 18+ · Dippy Super from $9.99/mo or $99/yr; ads-free $4.99/mo or $29.99/yr; 100 coins $3.49. Sources: App Store listing · official site (checked October 23, 2026).

8. Best for: One character you build in depth, with live voice calls

Kindroid

Kindroid starts from a blank page. Its listing says you “craft a detailed backstory and implant key memories,” so your character knows exactly who they are before the first message. It also advertises real-time voice calls, human-like text-to-speech and generated selfies, which suits long-running roleplay with one character.

Watch out: It takes more setup than a ready-made library. Extra Kindroid slots, selfie credits and audio credits cost extra.

Store listing: rated 18+ · Subscription $15.99/mo · $42.99/3 mo · $159.99/yr; Ultra $28.99; MAX $68.99. Sources: App Store listing (checked October 23, 2026).

Safety

Before you start: a short safety checklist

A roleplay app is software run by a company, and your stories are stored on its servers. Read the privacy policy, look for delete options, and set a monthly budget before you buy credits, gems or coins. Community libraries include dark themes, so choose stories and tags you are comfortable with and leave a scene that stops being fun. Check the age rating before a teen installs an app: three apps here are rated 13+, one 16+ and four 18+. Companies also change: Character.AI is being sold in bankruptcy (our update). If you are struggling, talk to someone you trust or a local support line.

Method

How we built this list

We looked for apps built for roleplay, whether with ready-made characters, an AI game master, an interactive story or one character you create, and chose eight that each serve a different need. The list is grouped by what you want, not ranked by quality. Features are what each publisher advertises, not hands-on test results; free plan details use listings, help centers and what App Store reviewers report. Prices (in USD) and age ratings were copied from each app’s store listing on October 23, 2026 and change often. Adult-only services are excluded. To browse every app that offers roleplay, see our AI roleplay apps collection. Read our methodology. FAQ

AI roleplay apps: common questions

What is the best AI roleplay app?

It depends on the kind of roleplay you want. For text adventures with an AI game master, try AI Dungeon. For the biggest library of characters, try Character.AI. For anime-style stories, try OOC. For free story roleplay rated 13+, try zeta. For romance that texts you back, try Heyyyy. For companions you design who send selfies on iPhone, try Duple, and for one deeply built character with live voice calls, try Kindroid.

Is there a free AI roleplay app?

All eight are free to download. zeta’s listing promises free, unlimited chats with ads, and AI Dungeon has a free tier with no ads. Character.AI can be used without paying, and Duple Lite is free by default. OOC gives free chat on its Basic model, but reviewers say story turns use a daily allowance of about 300 credits. Heyyyy and Dippy reviewers report daily limits and waits on the free plan.

Which AI roleplay app is best for teens?

AI Dungeon, OOC and zeta carry a 13+ age rating, and Duple is rated 16+. Character.AI, Heyyyy, Dippy and Kindroid are rated 18+, and Character.AI has removed open-ended chat for under-18s. Check the app’s own age policy and in-app controls before installing.

Which AI roleplay app has the best memory?

No app here remembers long stories perfectly; reviewers of almost every app mention forgetting. AI Dungeon gives you the most control, with Story Cards and a Memory Bank you can edit. Kindroid lets you write a backstory and key memories, and Duple advertises long-term memory you can reset or delete. OOC reviewers often praise its memory.

Can I roleplay with friends?

Yes. AI Dungeon supports multiplayer adventures, so friends can play the same story. None of the other apps here advertise multiplayer roleplay on their App Store listings.

Is Dippy really unlimited?

Dippy’s App Store listing says messages are unlimited and free, but App Store reviews since early 2026 describe a daily chat limit with waits of several hours unless you subscribe. Treat “unlimited” as unconfirmed.

Are AI roleplay apps safe?

Treat them like any app that stores private conversations. Read the privacy policy, check that you can delete your data, and set a budget before buying credits, gems or coins. Story libraries can include dark themes, so choose stories and tags you are comfortable with, and check the age rating before a teen installs an app.

Want to roleplay with a companion you design?
