Best Free AI Companion Apps (2026): 8 Free Plans Compared
The best free AI companion apps in 2026 are Character.AI for unlimited free chat, Duple Lite for a companion you design with long-term memory on iPhone, Pi for a fully free app with no in-app purchases, Nomi for 50 free messages a day with one companion, Replika for free everyday chat, Sesame for free voice conversations, AI Dungeon for free story roleplay with no ads, and PLAI for free character roleplay without an account. “Free” means very different things from app to app, so below we show exactly what each free plan gets you, from each app’s own help pages and store listing, checked October 27, 2026. Prices are in USD.

Free AI companion apps compared
Every app here is free to download. What differs is what you can do before paying: some give unlimited chat with ads, some a daily allowance, and two show no paid plan at all.
| App | Age rating | What free gets you | Paid upgrade |

| Character.AI | 18+ | Unlimited messages on the free PipSqueak 3 and ShortSqueak styles, with ads | (c.ai) lite $4.99/mo or $2.49/wk; c.ai+ $9.99/mo or $94.99/yr |

Daily limits, ads and voice on free plans
The three things that most often push people to pay are a message cap, ads and voice. “Not stated” means the app’s own pages we checked do not say either way.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Character.AI | Unlimited messages | Yes, plus slow mode when busy | Not listed for free | iPhone, Android, Web |
| Duple | 150 chat replies a day, up to 2 companions | Not stated | No voice on any plan | iPhone |

| Nomi | 50 messages a day | Not stated | Not listed for free | iPhone, Android, Web |
| Replika | Chat is free | Not stated | Voice calls are paid | iPhone, Android, Web |
| Sesame | No paid plan listed | No ads, Sesame says | Voice-first | iPhone, Android |

Pick by what you want for free
Want to chat a lot without paying? Character.AI is the only one here that says messaging is unlimited on its free tier. Want your own companion who remembers you? Duple Lite gives you 2 companions you design with long-term memory, and Nomi gives you 50 messages a day with one. Never want to see a paywall? Pi and Sesame listed no in-app purchases when we checked. Want stories? AI Dungeon is free with no ads, and PLAI is free with ads.

Character.AI
Character.AI has the most generous free plan here if you want to talk a lot. Its own blog says “unlimited messaging stays on every tier”, and its two newest chat styles, PipSqueak 3 for roleplay and ShortSqueak for quick casual chats, are free for everyone with “no special limits”. You browse a very large library of characters and stories or build your own.
Free plan: Unlimited messages on the free PipSqueak 3 and ShortSqueak styles, with ads.
Watch out: The free plan has banner and interstitial ads and a slow mode when the service is busy. Premium chat styles such as DeepSqueak and LongSqueak are paid. Character.AI filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on October 12, 2026 and is being sold (our update).
Age / paid upgrade: rated 18+ · (c.ai) lite $4.99/mo or $2.49/wk; c.ai+ $9.99/mo or $94.99/yr. Sources: Character.AI blog · App Store listing · our update (checked October 27, 2026).
Duple
Duple suits people who want a companion of their own rather than a library of strangers’ characters. Duple Lite is the free default: you create up to 2 companions, choosing their background, appearance and style, chat by text, and they keep long-term memory of your conversations. Duple companions also send generated selfies and photos, with outfits you can change. Duple Plus removes the daily cap and raises the companion limit to 10, 15 or 30, depending on the billing interval.
Free plan: Duple Lite: up to 2 companions, text chat and long-term memory, 150 chat replies a day.
Watch out: Lite caps chat replies at 150 a day, and some features are Plus-only, so the app prompts you to upgrade when you reach one. Duple is text chat only, with no live voice, and it is iPhone-only.
Age / paid upgrade: rated 16+ · Duple Plus $6.99/wk · $14.99/mo · $69.99/yr; Dokens packs from $1.99. Sources: Duple pricing · App Store listing (checked October 27, 2026).
Pi
Pi, from Inflection AI, is the closest thing to a fully free companion. Its App Store listing shows no in-app purchases at all. You talk to Pi itself, a warm and curious personality, by text or a live voice mode: to vent about a bad day, rehearse a hard conversation or think through a decision. Since September 2026 it also remembers lasting details such as your name and goals, and you can see, edit or delete those memories in Settings.
Free plan: Everything: the App Store listing shows no in-app purchases.
Watch out: There are no characters to design and no roleplay. Some reviewers say Pi interrupts, forgets things or crashes.
Age / paid upgrade: rated 18+ · None listed. Sources: App Store listing · official site (checked October 27, 2026).
Nomi
Nomi is built around one companion you create, give a backstory and keep talking to, and memory is what people praise most. Nomi’s own wiki says it “offers an indefinite free plan with 50 messages per day, allowing you to chat with a Nomi before subscribing.”
Free plan: An indefinite free plan with 50 messages a day.
Watch out: Fifty messages goes quickly in a long conversation. Nomi’s terms say subscriptions are nonrefundable, so use the free plan to decide before you pay.
Age / paid upgrade: rated 18+ · Standard $15.99/mo, $39.99/quarter or $99.99/yr; Launch $9.99/mo or $59.99/yr. Sources: help center · App Store listing (checked October 27, 2026).
Replika
Replika is the long-running one-companion app. You design an avatar and talk to them every day. Replika’s help center says “chatting with Replika will always be free”, and avatar customization is free too.
Free plan: Chatting is free, with avatar customization.
Watch out: Voice calls, roleplay and more sit behind a subscription. App Store reviewers say the yearly price is hard to justify before you have seen what the app does.
Age / paid upgrade: rated 18+ · Subscriptions from $7.99/mo up to Replika Platinum at $89.99. Sources: help center · App Store listing (checked October 27, 2026).
Sesame
Sesame is the free pick if you would rather talk than type. You choose one of four set characters, Maya, Miles, Simone or Charlie, and have a voice conversation that is built to feel natural, with memory shared across calls and text chats. When we checked on October 25, 2026, its App Store listing showed no in-app purchases, and Sesame says there are no ads.
Free plan: Everything, for now: no in-app purchases listed and no ads.
Watch out: You cannot create characters and there is no roleplay library. One App Store reviewer notes it is “free for now”.
Age / paid upgrade: rated 18+ · None listed. Sources: App Store listing · official site (checked October 27, 2026).
AI Dungeon
AI Dungeon, from Latitude, is for people who want a story rather than one companion. Pick a scenario or write your own, type what you do or say, and the AI narrates what happens and plays every other character. Reviewers praise the generous free tier and the lack of ads.
Free plan: Free to play with no ads.
Watch out: Reviewers say the AI can loop or lose track of long stories, and one says bought credits do not work on the free tier.
Age / paid upgrade: rated 13+ · Memberships $14.99 to $99.99 a month; credit packs from $9.99. Sources: help center · App Store listing (checked October 27, 2026).
PLAI
PLAI, which many reviewers still call RolePlai, lets you build characters, chat, play branching AI Adventures and put several characters in one group scene, all without signing up: chats stay on your phone. Reviewers like how much you get free and how few ads there are. PLAI Pro removes ads, raises limits and adds longer memory.
Free plan: Free with ads; no account needed.
Watch out: It is iPhone-only. Reviewers want better memory, and some say characters get details wrong mid-roleplay.
Age / paid upgrade: rated 18+ · PLAI Pro; ad-free and remove-ads purchases from $1.99. Sources: App Store listing · official site (checked October 27, 2026).
Kindroid is no longer a free companion app
Kindroid used to have a free Lite tier, and many “free AI companion” lists still include it. It no longer does. Kindroid’s help center, updated October 13, 2026, says new accounts get a one-time preview: 50 messages (15 in some regions), 5 selfies, 5,000 audio credits and up to 2 Kindroids. When the preview runs out, the account becomes read-only: you can view and export your chats but not send messages. The 3-day premium trial needs a payment method and converts into a subscription unless you cancel (Kindroid help center). See our Kindroid alternatives guide.
The r/KindroidAI moderators now answer “free version?” posts with the same message: “Free access has changed.” They add that accounts already on Lite “received one final batch of 50 flagship interactions” (r/KindroidAI). If you want a companion you build in depth and are happy to pay, Kindroid is still worth a look (Kindroid profile). If you want free, start with the apps above.
Before you start: a short checklist
A free plan is still a company storing your chats. Read the privacy policy, look for export and delete options, and set a budget before you buy coins, credits or Dokens. Free plans change, as Kindroid’s did this month, so keep copies of characters or chats that matter to you. If you are struggling, talk to someone you trust or a local support line.
How we built this list
We started from the AI companion apps in our directory and kept those with a free plan you can keep using, not just a trial. For each one we read the free-plan terms on the app’s own help center, blog or pricing page and its store listing on October 27, 2026. Apps are ordered by how much each free plan lets you do for the reason given, not by overall quality. Features are what each publisher advertises, not hands-on test results, and free plans change often. Adult-only services are excluded. Read our methodology. Free AI companion apps: common questions
What is the best free AI companion app?
It depends on what you want for free. For unlimited chat with a big character library, Character.AI. For a companion you design with long-term memory on iPhone, Duple Lite. For a fully free app with no in-app purchases, Pi. For free voice conversations, Sesame. For a daily allowance with one companion who remembers, Nomi. For free story roleplay with no ads, AI Dungeon.
Is there a completely free AI companion app?
Pi and Sesame came closest when we checked: their App Store listings showed no in-app purchases, and Sesame says it has no ads. Every other app here has a free plan plus paid upgrades. “Free” can change, so check the store listing before you rely on it.
Which free AI companion app has no message limit?
Character.AI says unlimited messaging stays on every tier, including free, though the free plan has ads and a slow mode at busy times. Nomi’s free plan is 50 messages a day, and Duple Lite allows 150 chat replies a day.
Is Kindroid still free?
Not really. Kindroid’s help center (updated October 13, 2026) says new accounts get a one-time preview of 50 messages (15 in some regions), 5 selfies, 5,000 audio credits and up to 2 Kindroids. After that the account becomes read-only until you subscribe. Its 3-day trial needs a payment method and converts to a paid plan unless you cancel.
Is Replika free?
Yes for chat. Replika’s help center says chatting with Replika will always be free, and avatar customization is free. Voice calls, roleplay and more need a subscription, which runs from $7.99 a month up to Replika Platinum at $89.99.
Is Duple free?
Yes. Duple Lite is the free default and includes up to 2 companions, text chat and long-term memory, with 150 chat replies a day. Duple Plus is $6.99 a week, $14.99 a month or $69.99 a year and removes the daily cap. Duple is iPhone-only and has no live voice.
Do free AI companion apps have ads?
Some do. Character.AI and PLAI show ads on their free plans. AI Dungeon says it is ad-free, Sesame says it has no ads, and Pi lists no in-app purchases. Ads are often how a free plan is paid for, so expect them unless the app says otherwise.
Are free AI companion apps safe?
Free or paid, your chats are stored on the company’s servers, so read the privacy policy, look for export and delete options, and avoid sharing anything you would not want stored. Apps can change their free plan at any time, as Kindroid did in October 2026.
Want a free companion who is yours alone?
Duple Lite is free on iPhone. Design up to 2 companions, then chat and build memories.
