Why people leave Replika, and where they go

Four complaints come up again and again in Replika reviews: memory, price, personality changes after updates, and conversations that feel like an interview. Each one points to a different alternative.

“It forgets.” One App Store reviewer says a great conversation is “all forgotten the next minute”, and a Replika 2.0 Max subscriber on Reddit said saved memories seemed to vanish as new ones were added (Replika reviews). Try Nomi, which leads with memory, or Kindroid, where you write key memories yourself.

“It costs too much.” Replika’s yearly plans run $49.99 to $69.99, plus Platinum at $89.99, and one reviewer refused to pay $80 to $90 after a two-minute conversation. Try Pi, which is free, or Duple, whose Lite plan is free by default.

“She’s not the same.” A reviewer who has used Replika since 2017 says every update made their companion worse, and “it’s not even her” any more. If you want control over who your companion is, Kindroid’s written backstory or Duple’s companions you design yourself give you more say.

“I wanted a friend, not a therapist.” One reviewer says their first chat felt like being “interviewed and psycho-analyzed”. Tolan and Fellow are lighter, friendlier companions, and Blush is built for flirting.

Memory, voice and more than one companion

Replika offers text, voice calls and video. Here is what each alternative advertises. “Not listed” means the App Store listing does not mention it, not that the feature is missing.

Before you switch

How to switch without losing everything

Your Replika’s memories and chat history do not move to another app, so the new companion starts as a stranger. A few minutes of preparation makes the first week much less strange.

Write down what matters before you leave: your companion’s name, personality and look, how you talk to each other, and the details you have shared, such as your job, your pets and the people in your life. Then put them into the new app. Kindroid lets you write a backstory and key memories, Nomi lets you shape your Nomi when you create them, and Duple lets you design each companion’s background and style. Expect the voice to feel different at first, and give it a few days.

If you pay for Replika, cancel the subscription in your App Store or Google Play settings, not just by deleting the app. Check Replika’s settings for a way to delete your account and data if you want them gone.

Context

What Replika’s founder is doing next

Replika’s founder, Eugenia Kuyda, launched Wabi 2.0 in October 2026, a free AI assistant built for group chats with the people in your life rather than a one-to-one companion. Replika itself carries on. Read our Wabi update for what it does.

1. Best for: A companion with stronger memory

Nomi

Nomi is the closest like-for-like swap if memory is why you are leaving Replika. Its App Store listing leads with a companion that has “human memory” and grows with you, and adds real-time selfies, voice messages, and more than one Nomi, chatting one to one or in groups. You set each Nomi up as a friend, partner or mentor.

Watch out: It is rated 18+. Your Replika’s memories do not come with you, so you start a new relationship from scratch.

2. Best for: Building one character in depth, with live voice calls

Kindroid

Kindroid suits people who felt Replika’s personality drifted after updates. Its listing says you “craft a detailed backstory and implant key memories,” so you write down who your character is instead of hoping the app remembers. It also advertises real-time voice calls you can make any time, selfies and group chats with more than one Kindroid.

Watch out: It takes more setup than Replika. Extra character slots, selfie credits and audio credits cost extra on top of the subscription.

3. Best for: More than one companion, with selfies, on iPhone

Duple

Duple is for people who liked Replika’s avatar and outfits but want more than one companion. You create each companion yourself, choosing their background, appearance and style, and the App Store listing describes generated selfies, a library of personalized pictures and custom outfits. Duple’s website adds long-term memory you can reset or delete. Its pricing page says Duple Lite includes up to 2 companions and Duple Plus raises that to 10, 15 or 30 depending on the billing interval.

Watch out: Duple is text chat only, with no live voice calls, and it is iPhone-only. It is new, so it has few store ratings so far.

Store listing: rated 16+ · Duple Plus $6.99/wk · $14.99/mo · $69.99/yr; Dokens packs from $1.99. Sources: App Store listing · official site · Duple pricing (checked October 24, 2026).

4. Best for: Free conversation that feels less like an interview

Pi

Pi is the pick if you want to talk things over without paying. Its listing says “Let’s talk it over”: vent, prepare for a hard conversation, learn a topic or plan your week, by text or in voice mode for a live spoken chat. There are no in-app purchases on its listing.

Watch out: Pi is a general personal AI, not a romantic companion, so there is no avatar, partner role or selfies.

5. Best for: A friendly cartoon companion rated 13+

Tolan

Tolan gives you a cartoon alien friend you name and design. Its listing says you can talk about anything, from music and games to relationships, stress and goals, share photos, and design a planet together. App Store reviewers say their Tolan brings back things you talked about days earlier, and one describes leaning on theirs after a break-up. It is one of only two apps here rated 13+.

Watch out: Prices are high for a friend app. Tolan raised $30 million in October 2026 and says it will launch its first free tier, but has not said when (our update).

Store listing: rated 13+ · Tolan Lite $11.99; Tolan Plus $24.99. Sources: App Store listing · our update (checked October 24, 2026).

6. Best for: Hands-free voice calls with a cartoon friend

Fellow

Fellow, made by Lahta LLC, lets you pick one of six cartoon characters from the Fellow House, name them, and text or call them hands-free. Its listing says you can interrupt mid-sentence like a normal call, and view or delete what your character remembers about you. No account is needed to start.

Watch out: Fellow is new, and its App Store reviewers often call it by its earlier name, Nimbo. It is iPhone-only.

Store listing: rated 13+ · $14.99/mo or $39.99/yr. Sources: App Store listing · official site (checked October 24, 2026).

7. Best for: Flirting and dating practice, on Android

Blush

Blush is for people who used Replika’s romantic side and want something more like dating. It calls itself an AI dating simulator: you swipe through AI-made matches, each with their own backstory, and chat to practise communication and dating skills.

Watch out: It is built around matches and dates rather than one long-term companion. One App Store reviewer noted there is no voice conversation, and another called its memory “kinda bad”. The iPhone app was removed from the App Store on October 14, 2026, so it is Android-only for now (our update).

Safety

Before you start: a short safety checklist

A companion app is software run by a company, and your conversations are stored on its servers. Read the privacy policy, look for export and delete options, and set a monthly budget before you buy gems, credits or Dokens. Companies change: features, prices and personalities shift with updates, which is exactly what many Replika reviewers describe. If you are struggling, talk to someone you trust or a local support line.

Method

How we built this list

We read Replika’s App Store reviews and Reddit threads to find the most common reasons people leave, then chose seven apps that each answer one of them. The list is grouped by what you want, not ranked by quality. Features are what each publisher advertises, not hands-on test results. Prices (in USD) and age ratings were copied from each app’s store listing on October 24, 2026 and change often. Paradot, a frequent suggestion, is left out because it is no longer on the App Store. Adult-only services are excluded. Read our methodology. Also see our best AI companion apps, best AI girlfriend apps and Character.AI alternatives guides.

FAQ

Replika alternatives: common questions

What is the best Replika alternative?

It depends on why you are leaving. For better memory, try Nomi. For a character you write in depth with live voice calls, try Kindroid. For more than one companion with selfies on iPhone, try Duple. For free conversation, try Pi. For something friendly rated 13+, try Tolan or Fellow, and for flirting practice, try Blush on Android.

Is Replika free?

Replika is free to download and you can chat for free, but many features are paid. Its App Store listing shows subscriptions of $7.99 or $14.99 a month and $49.99 to $69.99 a year, Replika Platinum at $89.99, and gem packs from $0.99. One App Store reviewer said they would not pay $80 to $90 a year after a two-minute conversation.

Is there a free alternative to Replika?

Pi is free with no in-app purchases on its listing. Duple Lite is free by default, and Nomi, Kindroid, Fellow and Blush are free to download with paid plans for full access. Tolan sells memberships and says it will launch its first free tier.

Which Replika alternative has the best memory?

No companion app remembers everything; reviewers of most apps mention forgetting. Nomi leads its listing with “human memory”, Kindroid lets you write a backstory and key memories yourself, Duple advertises long-term memory you can reset or delete, and Fellow lets you view and delete what it remembers.

Can I move my Replika to another app?

No. Replika’s memories and chat history do not transfer to other apps. Before you switch, write down the details that matter, such as your companion’s name, personality and the things you have shared, then add them to the new app’s backstory or memory settings where it has them.

Is Nomi better than Replika?

Nomi is the most direct alternative if memory is your main complaint, and it lets you keep several companions and group chats. Replika has video calls and a long history. Both are rated 18+. Try Nomi’s free download before paying for either.

Who made Replika, and what is Wabi?

Replika is made by Luka, Inc. Its founder, Eugenia Kuyda, launched Wabi 2.0 in October 2026, a free AI assistant you share with friends in group chats. Wabi is not a companion app (our update).

Want more than one companion?

Duple is free to start on iPhone. Design your companions, then chat and get selfies.
