Best cai alternative!
Not only are the chats more in character with longer responses, but I genuinely love the ui and the lore book option! … I really don’t mind the popups for the “buy premium” because it’s not in my face every two seconds
Anime characters, lorebooks and AI art in one app
★★★★★ 4.6 · based on 1,685 ratings

Moescape is a storytelling and art app for anime fans from Moescape Technology Corp. You can chat with characters from a library the community has made, or create your own characters and worlds, and pick between several AI models for the writing. Lorebooks let you attach world or character lore to a character, so you don’t have to explain the setting every time. Alongside the chat, Moescape has an anime-style image and video generator and a feed of community art you can like and collect. Its App Store screenshots show the character feed, a story chat, the character creator, image generation and the art community.
Reviewers who switched from Character.AI praise longer, more in-character replies, lorebooks, personas and chat styles, and say paying is optional rather than forced. One was surprised it helped them work through a linear algebra textbook. The complaints are about repetition, memory and the in-app currency, Mochi: some say replies repeat word for word or the AI stops responding, one says bots ignore corrections, and one says you can’t chat without Mochi. Accounts differ on how much is free. Moescape has been on the App Store since November 2024 and is rated 16+.
Moescape suits older teens and adults who love anime characters and want roleplay, character building and AI art in one place, especially if lorebooks and choosing your AI model matter to you.
If you want a single companion who remembers your life, reviewers say Moescape’s memory can slip. A memory-focused companion like Kindroid, Nomi or Duple may suit you better.

This is a great replacement for character ai but it doesn't have a lot of characters but it has lore books that you can connect to characters so they get world lore or character lore so you don't have to spend a hour explaining
I was suggested this app by a friend ever since C.ai went off the rails. Safe to say this alternative most definitely sufficed the boredom I feel whenever I feel like creating stories.
it’s a good app, the memory is pretty good and the chatbots are good as well, and it has a free unlimited message model which is nice
I initially came in to just yap around with the bots, but HOLY!!! I ended up discussing math with the bots!! They helped me summarize and understand parts of the textbook!!
mochi is basically the apps currency, and you can’t chat with any characters if you don’t have any, and every chat you send spends your mochi. It gives you 50 mochi to start off, and sure, that gives you a decent amount of chat time.
The only problems are that the bots memories are pretty terrible. You give it a correction and it’ll still ignore it unless you keep reiterating what you want it to do every chat
The responses just repeat the same thing like word for word over and over again
There’s a bug where after about 3 or 4 messages the Ai stops responding completely.
We searched Reddit through the Arctic Shift archive, but found no first-hand posts about the app yet (r/Moescape is an unrelated anime art community), so no Reddit quotes appear here. Reviewers give different accounts of how many free messages you get, so check the model and Mochi balance in the app. We skipped App Store reviews with sexual content.
Each review links to its source. Quotes are word for word; anything marked Paraphrase is our summary. We skipped reviews with explicit or abusive content. Reviewers’ names are not shown.
