AI Dungeon

An AI game master for text adventures

★★★★★ 4.4 · based on 26,805 ratings

What AI Dungeon is like

AI Dungeon is the original AI text adventure, made by Latitude. Instead of chatting with one character, you play a story. Pick a scenario, such as a zombie outbreak, a space colony or a fantasy quest, or write your own, then type what you do, say or see. The AI narrates what happens next and plays every other character. Its App Store screenshots show the scenario library, a story in progress with Do, Say, See and Story buttons, and a menu of AI models to choose from. Story Cards and a Memory Bank help it remember characters and places, and you can play with friends in multiplayer.

Reviewers who love it describe it as a tabletop RPG without the table. One moved away from their D&D group and found those adventures again here, and one writer says it got them writing after fifteen years. Many praise the generous free tier and the lack of ads. The common complaints are the AI repeating itself, losing continuity in long stories and mixing up characters. One reviewer was frustrated that bought credits did not work on the free tier.

Who it’s for

AI Dungeon suits teens and adults who like D&D, choose-your-own-adventure books or writing, and want to direct a whole story rather than chat with one partner. It carries a 13+ age rating.

If you want a companion who knows you, or voice and photos, it is not built for that. A companion app such as Duple, Kindroid or Nomi fits better.

What you can do

  • Play text adventures from thousands of community scenarios
  • Create your own scenarios and characters
  • Choose from several AI models
  • Keep track of characters and places with Story Cards and a Memory Bank
  • Play with friends in multiplayer, and generate scene images

A Lifechanger

I’m a writer. Or, more accurately, I was a writer for a very long time. … What makes AI Dungeon special is the feeling of playing with a story rather than simply consuming one. … But somewhere in all of that, I started writing again. … It feels less like outsourcing creativity and more like having an infinitely patient improv partner who has occasionally wandered into the wrong genre.

★★★★★

Weave Tales of Your Characters

I used to play D&D with a group at a wonderful store but I moved, and was sorely missing the adventurous tales we had. But in this, you find so many stories in so many settings, both ones you love and ones others created

★★★★★

Powerful & Flexible

Coming from a platform that was more dialogue driven and focused on chat bot interactions, AID provides an architecture that greatly expands the possibilities and scope of storytelling. The story cards are an interesting concept because your characters can be simply plugged into new scenarios without having to rebuild everything!

★★★★★

Literally the best of its group

1. No ads. (At least I haven’t encountered any) 2. You get a LOT out of the free content … 3. Monetization isn’t really pushed into your face.

My Go-To Game

I pay for the legendary tier but this is like a daily obsession for me, in a good way! I play stories from Game of Thrones to Marvel and everything in between and while the AI could be a bit better at following prompts and cues, it has provided me with endless hours of thought provoking stories and endless fun.

★★★★★

Worth 10hrs

Downloaded this at the start of my shift to play a zombie story. Didn’t have any work to do all day so I got to enjoy it. It’s as good as AI can get! Of course it forgets things but it’s trying to pull information out of nowhere. With a simple correction my story experience was 9/10. The scene Image generator could be better.

★★★★★

Pretty interesting

The AI takes the reigns, writing up paragraphs lot at once. … The longer the story drags on the more the continuity is muddled up and lost. … Characters don’t separate well either.

★★★★★

Good story making

I find that models LOVE to repeat themselves a LOT. So you have to keep retrying multiple times to get the ai to snap out of the loophole of death. … Update 9/29/26 The developers are absolutely improving this app each week. … THE REPETITIVE LOOPING is getting A LOT more rare now.

★★★★★

Frustrating

Can’t have a normal adventure or even a normal conversation without the AI trying to pin my character as a horrific criminal or being excessively cruel to my innocent character. I’ve tried so many different ways to fix it and I’m just tired of the AI abusing my characters… I’m deleting this game.

Credits

I wish I knew that I couldn't use my credits I purchased to extend the story models on the free tier. When I read the descriptions it didn't say anywhere I had to have a subscription to use the content I purchased so now I'm out of luck.

AI Dungeon’s membership names changed in 2026, so some older reviews mention tiers such as Adventurer or Champion that are now retired or renamed. Reddit blocks our research tools, so no Reddit quotes appear here yet. We skipped App Store reviews with sexual content.
