A make-your-own AI girlfriend app is a companion app that lets you design the character yourself. All six here are on the App Store and let you create a companion rather than only chat with one someone else made. They differ in what you control: some are built around her looks and photos, some around a written backstory, and some around voice.

No app does everything. Kindroid has the most written fields and a voice you design. Duple and EVA AI focus on her look. Character.AI is closest to writing fiction. Here is what each publisher says you can set.

How to make your own AI girlfriend
An AI girlfriend creator is the screen where you set a companion’s looks, personality and backstory before you start chatting. The steps are much the same in every app, though the screens and names differ.
- Pick the app by what matters most. Looks and photos: Duple or EVA AI. A written personality and a voice: Kindroid. A free plan on any device: Nomi. Writing a character: Character.AI.
- Design her look. Choose her appearance, style and outfit in the creator. In Nomi you choose from preset appearances; in EVA AI you set gender, age, ethnicity and hair.
- Write a short backstory. Two or three sentences on who she is, what she does and how you met work better than a long list of traits. Kindroid, Nomi and Character.AI all let you write a backstory.
- Set the relationship. Nomi has a relationship type you can set to Romantic. In Replika, a romantic partner needs Replika Pro.
- Chat for a few days. Memory is what makes her feel like yours. Tell her the things you want her to remember, and correct her early if she gets something wrong.
- Set a budget. Selfies, outfits, extra companions and romantic messages often cost credits. Decide what you will spend each month before you buy any.

Duple
Duple is built around a companion you create rather than one you pick from a library. Its App Store listing says you “choose their background, appearance, and style,” then chat by text and get generated selfies. You can design outfits, build a wardrobe and keep favourite images in one library. Duple Lite is free and lets you create up to 2 companions with long-term memory; Duple Plus raises that to 10, 15 or 30 depending on the billing interval.

Watch out: Duple is text chat only, with no live voice, and it is iPhone-only (iOS 26 or later). Some features are Plus-only, and extra actions such as a new outfit cost Dokens.

Kindroid
Kindroid gives you the most fields to fill in. Its listing says you can “shape your AI’s personality, backstory, and key memories.” You can also give it a custom avatar and “design a custom voice from a simple description.” Your Kindroid can then voice call and video call you, and send selfies that match its look.

Watch out: Kindroid retired its free tier on October 1, 2026, so expect to subscribe (Kindroid alternatives). Since October 27, 2026, its iPhone app blocks uploaded images with explicit nudity, including avatars; the web app is not affected (our update).

Nomi
Nomi lets you choose from “hundreds of appearances” and add “customizable backstories and Shared Notes” to shape who your companion is. Its App Store screenshots show a relationship type you can set to Romantic, alongside personality traits and interests. Nomi’s wiki says there is an indefinite free plan with 50 messages a day, so you can build her before you pay.

Watch out: You pick from preset appearances rather than designing a face from scratch. Nomi’s iPhone app was last updated on March 31, 2026, and free messages are capped at 400 characters.

EVA AI
EVA AI’s listing says you can “create and customize your own AI character.” Its App Store screenshots show a creator where you choose a gender, age, ethnicity and hair. After that, the relationship is meant to develop slowly, with moods that shift and memories you build together.

Watch out: EVA AI’s terms, updated June 30, 2026, say that “one romantic message costs 2 neurons to be read,” so a romantic chat costs Neurons or a membership.

Replika
Replika has been building one companion per person since 2017. You customise its avatar, and its listing says it “remembers your people, plans, and goals,” then checks in on its own. It also has voice and video calls.
What you can shape: An avatar you customise, plus a companion that remembers your people, plans and goals.
Watch out: Replika’s help center says relationship statuses beyond friend, including romantic partner, come with Replika Pro, so the girlfriend part is paid. You shape her by talking with her over time more than by filling in a backstory.

Character.AI
Character.AI is for writers. Its listing says its Character Creation tools let you design characters “with unique personalities, backstories, and even Voices,” and you can share your creation with its community. Free chat has no message cap, and its own blog says “unlimited messaging stays on every tier.”
What you can shape: A personality, backstory and voice in its Character Creation tools, and you can share your character.
Watch out: You get a character, not a girlfriend app: there are no selfies of the companion you design, and the free plan shows ads. Character.AI filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on October 12, 2026 and is being sold (our update).

Before you start: keep it fictional and private
Every app here stores what you tell it, so read the privacy policy and check whether you can export or delete your chats. Do not base a companion on a real person, or upload their photo, without their consent. If you live in New York, state law now requires AI companion apps to detect and respond to signs of self-harm and to remind you regularly that you are talking to AI. If you are struggling, talk to someone you trust or a local support line.

Apps are ordered by how much of her you can design and how easy it is to start, not by a hands-on score. Features are what each publisher advertises, not test results. How do I make my own AI girlfriend?
Pick an app with a character creator, choose her looks, write a short personality and backstory, set the relationship to romantic where the app allows it, then chat for a few days so her memory fills in. Duple, Kindroid, Nomi and EVA AI all have a creator for looks; Character.AI is best if you want to write the character yourself.
Can I make my own AI girlfriend for free?
Yes, within limits. Duple Lite lets you create up to 2 companions for free on iPhone, Nomi has a free plan with 50 messages a day, and Character.AI lets you write a character and chat without a message cap, with ads. Kindroid no longer has a free tier, and the romantic side of Replika and EVA AI is paid.
Which app gives you the most control over your AI girlfriend?
